Fix My Resume. Let’s set this straight now–there is no simple fix. The screening process counts on the fact that so many resumes don’t make the mark. Writing a resume is tough. That’s all there is to it. Most people do not like to write. Most people do not like sales. A resume is both – it is a written sales pitch. Ouch! Double whammy. Let’s review the keys that make up the 10-second resume rule. You can’t beat a system you don’t understand, right? These top resume tips will improve chances that your resume will make it through the initial 10-second evaluation round.
Are you a job seeker facing this highly competitive, more demanding world? Have you experienced how the new systems, technologies, and the economy have made the hiring process much more complicated, impersonal and time consuming? Much to the job seeker’s frustration, it has become a distinct two stage competition – first: the resume competition and second: the interview process. Perhaps you’ve tried to reach the hiring manager and tried to sell yourself into an interview. Maybe you’ve left multiple messages to the recruiter in HR to follow up on the resume that you submitted. It’s difficult to get any personal response. So your resume is forced to do your selling for you. So how can you get an ”edge” using a ”resume coach”? Here are some facts: When thousands of resumes are searched by recruiters, if you’re not on page 1 or 2, you’re probably not even in the running.
Write the Experience Summary section of your job resume for each specific position you are seeking. You must state a convincing case as to why you are the perfect candidate. For example, if you were applying for a computer programming job, you should focus your Experience Summary on your computer programming skills and experience and establish yourself as qualified right away. It may be nice that you were in a community play or a scout leader, but it is not relevant and won’t get you the job. This ultimate purpose of this section is to quickly make you stand out from other applicants. When drafting your Experience Summary, keep asking yourself if someone else would be able to make the same statements in their own resume. If so, you need to go back and re-work it again. You need to establish your value to the employer and clearly tell them, ”Here is what I can do for you.” Investing your time on this one step will bring huge rewards for you.
Years of experience- Though this is sometimes difficult to confirm, information can be verified merely by talking the person in charge of the service and/or checking to see when a website or business was formally established through public records. Don’t rely merely on what a website claims; pick up the phone talk to the owner. Ask pointed questions as to when they started in the business, what their background consists of and how many resumes they’ve written. Question them on resume trends, job search statistics and their success rate. In short, get a feel for who will be managing your writing project. If he/she falters, or seems to steer the conversation away from themselves and back onto you, i.e., trying to sell their services without even listening to your questions or what you need, chances are they aren’t as experienced as they say. Most true professionals in any industry are generally proud of their work and more than happy to talk about what they know, how they’ve contributed and better yet, how they can help you. Conclusion – Any answers bathed in hesitation, evasiveness, hard selling or rudeness should clue you in to either performing more research or better yet, moving on.
I thought this was a powerful statement that couldn’t be a more perfect fit, so I submitted it as part of my resume certification program. The rewrite I received back was a bit of a surprise. The ”resume expert” restated the sentence as ”Innovative technology professional, expert in building complex solutions and extracting optimum results from a company’s technology investment.” In trying to improve what I had written, the reviewer changed the meaning and reduced the value of the statement. The more general statement sounds good, but it loses the concept of making much from basic technology. More importantly, it is a less clear statement that takes a more careful read to find the meaning. Most important of all – it loses the sense of Stephen as a person who takes pride in his technical abilities. Stephen also has a love of learning and finds it rewarding to help others learn. He is naturally patient, and is clear and descriptive in his explanations. This important aspect of Stephen closes his summary of qualifications with the statement” ”Applies natural talent to translate a love of learning into a love of teaching, and helping others to learn.” To reinforce this message we interwove elements of teaching into his resume with a section titled Business Intelligence (BI) Technical Training and Learning Laboratory Management
Unrelated personal interests and hobbies: Several years ago, when writing my first resume, I remember being directed to add my hobbies and interests at the bottom of the resume. These hobbies and interests were supposed to show that I was a well-rounded, interesting person. However, this is no longer the norm. In fact, just as adding an ”Objective” to your resume is outdated, so is adding your personal interests. Recruiters just want the facts of your experience relating to the position. Again, you are wasting a Recruiters valuable time by adding these little tidbits of personal information. In fact, by adding this additional information incorrectly, you take the risk of your resume ending up in a circular file (the one next to the recruiter’s desk that contains the remnants of their lunch!). I have had the unfortunate opportunity to review resumes of candidates who listed their personal interests as ”Jazz Hand Aficionado”, ”Exotic Pole Dancer”, and ”Cat Whisperer”. Really?? What does that have to do with a Sales Manager position? As you can imagine, these prospective candidates were not selected for interview.
