A poorly qualified candidate with an elegant, professional looking resume may get called for a job interview, while a stronger candidate can be left behind because of poor resume aesthetics or subpar presentation, and no one will ever know. It’s a one way street. A poor resume might generate a 1/20 interview ratio, while an exceptional resume should generate a 1/6 ratio or better. Resumes are often read with a negative bias. ”What is this candidate missing?” As a longtime recruiter, 50% of the resumes that I screened were poorly written. About 40% were average and only 10% were effective selling resumes. Most resumes are narrative, unfocused and are not ”selling resumes”. A Selling resume is at least 31% more likely to land interviews, 40% more likely to receive a job offer, and 38% more likely to be contacted by recruiters, compared to an average resume. A Selling resume is about 70% more likely to get interviews than a poor resume.

DON’T. Misrepresent the Truth – Lying on your resume is never a good idea. You don’t want to start a professional relationship based on the misrepresentation of facts. Just as you would hope the employer is not lying to you about the job requirements, salary, etc, they expect you are not lying to them about your background and/or skill sets. It’s the decent and respectable way to conduct yourself and there is no room for dishonesty in the workplace because, sooner or later, these things always have a tendency to come to the surface. Remember: The truth shall set you free! Use Slang or Jargon – You need to be as professional as possible in the context of your resume if you expect to be taken seriously as a professional. For this reason, you should avoid using familiar lingo, slang, or jargon in your resume. The exception to this rule is when using very industry-specific terminology to describe your particular skills. This can actually help to lend you credit as a knowledgeable individual and an expert in your field, but your such terms wisely and tactfully. Include a Picture – Unless you’re a model or in a professional dependent on physical attributes, I always advise against putting your picture on your resume. In my experience, it can do more harm than good. So keep the formatting of the resume simple and let the hiring manager use their imagination until they call you in for an interview. Plus, your looks should have nothing to do with your professionalism or the credentials qualifying you for the position. In the business world (even legally), your appearance should have no value as a selling point for you as a competent job candidate.

Used for networking purposes. 3. Recommended use for introductory purposes or to break the ice. 4. Mostly used for networking purposes. Resume With Profile. 1. Includes a summary of an applicant’s skills, experiences and goals as they relate to a specific job. 2. These kinds of resumes are very detailed and long drawn. 3. Mostly used and asked for Legal purposes like migration or by the law. Infographic Resume. 1. An infographic resume uses visuals including images, photos, graphs, charts and other graphics to provide information about a job seeker. 2. Infographics can be shared with connections and prospective employers and pinned to Pinterest. 3. They are like traditional resumes in that they convey similar information such as contact information, previous work experience, and related skills. 4. However, infographic resumes convey this information in a highly visual format; for example, instead of listing previous work experience in chronological order, an infographic resume may display this information in an illustrated timeline. 5. An infographic’s unique blend of text and images can help job seekers stand out from other applicants.

A resume should not be a static document. It should be reviewed and re-drafted each time an applicant applies for a different role. Different roles have different selection criteria, and a resume should be constantly modified to suit the requirements of each new role. Recruiters are quick to identify and penalise instances of static cover letters or resume’s. The single most significant reason for immediate rejection of a resume remains spelling and punctuation errors. Given the leg-up with auto spell check applications, one would expect fewer errors of this nature, however these spelling and grammar applications come with an unfortunate (though sometimes humorous) side effect if not used properly. Some well know examples include the banker who was ”highly experienced in all faucets of finance’, or the Project Manager with ’extensive steak holder management skills’.

Never submit a resume with handwritten corrections. You can highlight sections of a resume by using a different typeface or size or by using ”bullets.” If possible, use larger letters for the headings used in the separate sections of the resume. Never try to be too fancy by using wild colors, cute graphics, and so forth. Don’t be overly creative. A simple, straightforward, factual resume will do nicely. Make it stand out, but stay conservative. Another phase of your resume’s appearance is it’s accuracy. Make sure there are no misspelled words! Mistakes will create the wrong image. Make sure that the punctuation is correct. And make sure that all of your columns line up. See that all of your facts are correct. Don’t say you attended 3 years of college, but only show two years worth of grades. Potential employers will note all inaccuracies and wonder why they appear in your resume. OPTIONAL DATA There is a variety of personal data that may be somewhat controversial if included in your resume. In the past it was acceptable to include all kinds of personal data, but times and laws have changed. Affirmative Action laws have made it illegal to discriminate based on such things as age, sex, marital status, race, religion, and so forth. Therefore, most experts recommend against placing this kind of personal data into your resume. Your salary requirements should not be listed in the resume, if you can avoid it. The reason is that if you put too low of a salary, you might be paid less than the real value of the job. If you put down a figure that’s too high, you may not get considered for the job. If an employer likes you, it may be possible to negotiate a higher salary during the interview stage. Another thing that your resume doesn’t need is your photograph.

6. Use Action Verbs. Choose your verbs carefully. So many resumes are uninteresting due to poor verb choices. There are definitely skills to great writing, and using the right words to convey action and engage the resume reviewer is one of those skills. Ensure that your sentences are worded to show that you actually did something. It sounds silly, but consider the following two sentences: – This approach was an improvement over the previous standard operating procedures. – This approach improved the standard operating procedures. Note that both sentences convey the same meaning. However, the second sentence is more active. That is, the subject of the second sentence (this approach) actually did the action (performed). In the first sentence, the subject is the same (this approach), however the verb (was) does not convey direct action. Try your best to make your sentence convey action by using action verbs. If you are struggling in this area, you may wish to consider working with a professional resume writer for help.

Almost people who tend to seek a job understand that resume is the decisive factor to whether you can make it to the interview round or not. Moreover, don’t forget that resume and resume is ”two sides of the one” which show your outstanding capability. However, not everyone can know how to make his resume and resume become ”decisive” to the employer. It is not about spending more time or providing more information in the resume that make that resume becomes well impressive to the employers. The employers are very busy as they may receive hundreds of resumes and resumes each day from different candidates. So, think carefully before you send your resume and resume to an employer is a good way to win over other candidates. Don’t expect to win the employer when your resume and resume are common without any particularity. So, don’t waste time sending ”imperfect” resume and resume to different employers because your chance of getting to the next round is not significant at all.

Cut to the Chase – Don’t waste time…get to the good stuff. As I said before, a hiring manager will most often skim, scan, and glance over a resume. Keep in mind that they have specific questions in mind when they review a resume for the first time and they expect specific answers. One of the most important questions they are asking is: ”Who has this person worked for in the past?” For this reason, I always suggest that serious job seekers highlight their experiences first and foremost. Right below your one-sentence Objective Statement you should transition into and Experience section. In this section you should list your past employers, the years you worked for them, your job titles, and a brief description of your duties there. Of course, this may not be the best approach for some people. If your background is heavily dependent on your academic experience, then you may want to jump into that first.
