Here Is Why Your Resume Can Make or Break Your Job Prospects. Are you looking for a job? Or do you plan to look for a job in the near future? Those questions represent the most common reasons why someone would begin to look at their resume and decide if it needs to be updated. What most people discover over time is that their resume should always be update-to-date as job changes can occur suddenly and without any prior warning. But most people wait until a resume is needed and it is at this time that a decision is made to try to refine and update it, or leave it as is and hope that it will be sufficient enough to gain a recruiter or hiring manager’s attention. There is a misconception that because resumes are rarely mailed out any longer, they are not that important. Yet many online application forms still request that a resume copy be uploaded for review. A challenge for many people is knowing how to create an effective resume. You can conduct an Internet search and find literally hundreds of online articles and resources that provide fairly standard methods of creating a resume; however, that can become overwhelming in time. In addition, few people are highly skilled as a writer, and poorly written sentences with numerous spelling and grammatical errors can create a poor impression. You have to keep in mind the fact that when you send out a resume it is taking your place and represents you as a person, without the guarantee of securing an interview – and that means your resume can make or break your job prospects before you ever get to speak to someone about it.
Inappropriate pictures: Within the last five years I have seen a definite increase in resumes that include a picture or pictures of the candidate. Interestingly, hiring managers seem to have a difference of opinion regarding the addition of pictures; some hiring managers seem to appreciate being able to visualize a candidate while reading over the candidate’s qualifications, whereas others seem to think that it is a distraction. Personally, I am not a big fan of this practice, as I have seen the most inappropriate pictures that you can imagine! For example, I have received resumes submitted by female candidates where they are photographed with short skirts or showing their décolletage. I have received resumes from male candidates where their pictures show them in casual attire (fishing hats, swim suits, etc.), or worse, in pictures that include their whole family. However, the most inappropriate picture that I have ever seen to date on a resume was one that included a nude photo of the candidate’s genitals! Not only is this the most inappropriate picture imaginable, I have to say it is extremely creepy!! If you are inclined to include a photo on your resume it should be professionally photographed, and should include a head shot with a plain background in professional attire. My professional opinion is that if you are in doubt about the appropriateness of a picture, do not include it!
So in order get an edge in the paper competition, your document can’t be just a resume —- but a Selling Resume! Since many of us do not have sales experience, and are too close to the topic to really sell ourselves objectively, we need to consult a sales-oriented advisor, a ”resume coach” to guide us in the presentation. A selling resume is not about ”you ”, but about ”how you can help solve a problem”. Every job exists to solve a business problem. Your resume has to sell you as a solution. They also allow the writer to remain up to date on hiring, employment and writing trends while providing vast networking opportunities through the members that include a diverse group of professionals including recruiters, career coaches, resume writers, job search strategists and human resource managers. These organizations are entirely focused on the career industry and most hold yearly conventions, semi-annual courses and teleclasses. They offer industry-related book clubs, e-lists, newsletters and articles that continue to help the member gain knowledge in almost any career-related topic, whether it is unemployment statistics, cover letter writing, recruiter trends or unique client situations. Conclusion – Paid memberships normally prompt active participation from members and provide the writer with great, up-to-date resources.
2. Gather your information: After studying several resume samples and templates decide what and how you want to write your resume. When you are writing a resume your ultimate aim is to write a resume that guarantee you interview calls relatively a dream job. Based on this gather your academic, professional and personal information. You are selling yourself on your resume so find out your most marketable skills. Your resume must absolutely avoid words and phrases that may make the readers think that you are too sharp and even deceitful.
