Once Your Resume is Written. After your resume is done, the rest of the work is up to you. Unless you have chosen a resume service that offers resume distribution, it is time for you to start sending your resumes out to companies that match the career path you have selected. You need to keep in mind that a cover letter, specialized for each company you apply at, should accompany your resume. If you are unsure of how to effectively write a cover letter, be sure to choose a resume writing service that offers cover letter training. Your cover letter is just as important as your resume since it is the very first thing your potential employer will see.
4. List any Professional Certifications. Different employers place different emphasis on professional certifications. Many employers find these certifications very important, often even requiring them for certain positions. But there are also other employers who might prefer candidates with certifications, but do not require them. Still others do not pay attention to certifications at all. Since you have no idea what the company or reviewer believes about certifications, you should always list them if you have them. Professional certifications from major vendors and professional associations typically carry the most weight and are well worth the investment of time and cost. They are definitely good things to have and can often give you an edge over other similar candidates being considered. In the computer programming area, certifications from Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, and the like are definitely in demand. Highly sought after certifications from professional associations include A+, Network+, and Security + from Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA); Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) from International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)²; and Project Management Professional (PMP) from Project Management Institute.
* Red Flag Number 1: Resumes written in third person. Resumes should never be written in third person. Use first person and choose the present or past tense to showcase the most important and relevant information to your employment goals. In the example below, you will see that a resume written in third-person does not have the dynamic impact of a resume written in first-person: Jane Doe is an excellent event manager and never went over budget. The resume statement above does not use action verbs and is not a strong statement of Jane’s abilities. We know this resume is written about Jane because her name is at the top of the document, so there is no reason to keep stating Jane’s name – we need to use that space to sell her abilities to the prospective employer!
A stronger, more relevant resume statement would start with a strong action verb: – Managed numerous large and small events, always staying within budget. – * Red Flag Number 2: Resumes that do not have eye appeal. If the resume is not appealing to the eye, you will turn off the prospective reader immediately. No one wants to read a resume that is formatted with tiny font and no white space! White space allows the eye to rest between reading and absorbing the content and it acts as a clue to important information the employer should read with care. At the same time, a resume with too much white space will make it look like you have no relevant experience or skills to offer the employer. Find a happy medium – keep the resume readable and clean while filling the space.
K.I.S.S. – A wiser man than me once made this bold statement and it’s extremely applicable when writing your resume: Keep It Simple, Stupid! Too many people make too much of an effort to ”stand out from the pack” and in doing so they may unwittingly be hurting themselves. In some professions, such as the creative design field, it may be advantageous to show your originality and imagination, but in other business fields this kind of flamboyancy in a resume is unnecessary and can actually be injurious to your cause. In terms of formatting, the same holds true. I have found that people tend to have much more success when they opt for an uncomplicated formatting style. Some people still want to get all jazzed up with pictures and text boxes and funky font, but that’s just fluff. It’s noise. It is irrelevant to the purpose of your resume, which is to sell yourself through highlighting your skills and accomplishments. And hiring managers see right through that!
Links or URLs unrelated to the position: The ability to utilize the Internet to apply for positions certainly has allowed prospective candidates to share more information about them than a written resume allows. In fact, candidates can attach video resumes, and links to personal websites, blogs, and social networking pages. My advice to this practice is: DON’T DO IT!! Again, candidates run the risk of making an embarrassing professional faux pa. Just recently, I received a resume with a link to the candidate’s Facebook page. Unfortunately, that same candidate had uploaded pictures to that same Facebook page that showed him, let’s just say, in an unprofessional light (drinking, partying, some nudity!) Well, as a recruiter, my reputation is at risk every time I forward a resume to a hiring manager. I am not about to take a chance on a candidate with such poor decision-making skills.
