Certifications- There are a number of different writing, training and coaching certifications available from which to pursue and from a variety of professional organizations that focus on writing or coaching practices. This does not mean that certification guarantees a quality product, nor does it mean that whoever certified the individual is the best judge of writing/coaching, particularly when the judging is based on a number of subjective opinions as to what a ”good” coach or writer really should do. However, many of the professionals I know who are in the business of certifying individuals are frequently right on the money. Though certifications are certainly helpful in your decision making process, you cannot automatically discount a service that does not boast any. Most certifications require payment in order to take a test or complete a course and there are many qualified, talented professionals who do not feel the need for investing money just to prove what they already know – that they’re skilled in what they do and have proven their mettle over the years, gaining more knowledge and hands-on experience than any certification could demonstrate. You may prefer to work with an experienced writer rather than someone who just recently obtained his or her certification, yet has little experience their belt or find someone who has both. Conclusion – While certification is helpful and shows a commitment to one’s craft, there are plenty of other good writers who are producing astounding work without the formality. Skill Sets or a Chronological Listing? Another important decision that has to be made about the development of a resume is the format it should follow and the most common approach is use of a chronological style. This approach lists each job in chronological or date order and the most current job is listed at the top of the page. The inherent problem with this type of resume is that the focus is placed on what the candidate is doing now without drawing attention to the skills that have been acquired throughout their entire career. My approach to resume writing involves the use of a skill set based approach and that means when a recruiter or hiring manager opens the resume they first read skill sets that have been acquired throughout the candidate’s career. More importantly, the skill sets listed are directly related to the job or career the candidate is interested in. This can change the entire perspective of the candidate when viewed by a potential employer as now they are viewed beyond the current job they hold. This is an especially helpful approach for anyone who is interested in changing jobs or careers.
7. Write About Your Results, Not Responsibilities. Don’t let your resume make the mistake of focusing on your previous jobs’ responsibilities. Your resume should focus on the computer programming work that you did and what you achieved. As a hint, avoid using the word responsibility or responsibilities on your resume so you don’t fall into this trap. In writing about each of your previous jobs, discuss your results. Tell about what results were realized because of the work you performed. Be quantitative. Reviewers love to see numbers and results. Tell about how many desktops or users you supported, recount how many databases you administered, show a percentage of application or network uptime you maintained, provide a percent reduction of security incidents you achieved, etc. Get the idea? This is where you impress your reviewer. One of the current trends in job candidate evaluation is behavioral with the idea being that your past performance is the best indicator of your future performance. So, toot your horn a little and make your accomplishments known. Quantifying your experience is usually the most difficult part of preparing a resume for any person. So take some time, think it through, and detail the results you achieved in each of your positions relevant to the one for which you are applying.
For example, let’s say the cost of your resume is $495.00, which, initially, may seem like a significant investment. However, once that resume starts opening doors to more quality interviews than you’ve received in the past and results in a quality position with an impressive salary, even after an extended period of employment, this investment has paid for itself. Conclusion – Price should obviously be measured, yet not be the driving factor of your selection.

(7) Don’t be too concerned about salary and benefits at first. If you are selected, they will make you a salary offer. Toward the end of the interview you can ask about benefits. AFTER THE INTERVIEW There are a number of things that you can do after the interview that will make you an even more attractive job candidate. Here are a few tips: (1) Write a thank you letter. If you really want the job, say so in the letter. (2) If you have not heard anything within 8 to 10 days, you may want to call. Assure them that you are not trying to be pushy, but that you are just interested. If you aren’t hired, you can still send a thank you letter to the company and ask them to keep you in mind for any other similar job openings. Also, you may want to ask the interviewer for a specific reason as to why you weren’t hired. This information will help you as you search for other jobs. CONCLUSION Getting a good job that you want is not always easy. There are many qualified people after every top paying position that is available. But if you use the strategies described in this report, you’ll stand a much better chance of success. Be persistent and don’t sell yourself short. You could end up with a much better job in a very short period of time.
