Do not put an Objective section on your resume. Why would you? What value does it add? Space on your resume is limited and is better used to provide a one paragraph (2-3 sentences) summary of your qualifications for the specific position. This summary should include years of experience, types of experience, and highlight the most important technologies related to the position. This section is used to make the resume reviewer’s screening process easier and improve your chances of passing the initial screening. Use it wisely and tailor it for each position. Finally, make sure each job history write-up in your experience history (your job summaries) includes these details as well. When I get into a detailed resume review, one of the first things I do is map the summary to the details. I try to determine where and when you had the required experience for the computer programmer job. If I can’t find it called out in the details, I will assume you don’t have that experience, regardless of what your summary says. It is very important that you to pay attention to these details because, as a reviewer, I most certainly do. The job summaries are the key to getting past the initial resume screening. Take time to make sure the details line up with what you said in your experience summary and technical skills list.
If you have ever been on a fishing expedition, you know the most successful fishermen use the best, most appropriate bait available. They also have the most lines (and hooks) in the water. A job search is much like a fishing expedition. Your resume represents the bait, and each company that you send your resume to represents a line with a hook that allows you to snag a job. Think of your ideal job as that big fish, the one you can’t wait to brag about to your friends, the one that didn’t get away, and your claim to fame! Just as it is important for a fisherman to use the right bait to attract that big fish, it is imperative that job seekers use the right resume to attract that big job opportunity. During my career as a Corporate Recruiter, I have had the opportunity to review thousands of resumes. Some of those resumes have been stellar; the resume is formatted professionally, well written, and portrays the candidates in their best light. On the other hand, I have also had the unfortunate opportunity to review some of the worst resumes ever written! In fact, some of those resumes were so bad that they have received honorary status on my list of the seven worst things I have ever seen on a resume. These prospective candidates committed what I call the ”Seven Deadly Sins of Resume Writing”:
Include a Core Competencies Section – I find Core Competency sections to be fairly worthless in a professional resume and I’ll tell you why: It doesn’t matter if you’re a waitress, an administrative assistant, a nurse, a teacher, or a sales executive – it doesn’t matter what kind of background you have – anyone can describe themselves as ”Self-Motivated”. Anyone can say they are ”Goal Oriented” and ”Results-Driven” and everyone has ”Strong Verbal and Written Skills” when they’re applying for a job. I can say with some degree of certainty that the majority of hiring managers and HR administrators skip right past a Core Competencies section and with good reason. The key to a successful resume is in SHOWING a manager how you are ”Results-Driven” and ”Goal Oriented” instead of just TELLING them! Your accomplishments speak volumes, let them do the talking. If you are going to include a Core Competencies section, make sure it’s unique and adds value. Again, vagueness will often work against you here because it cheapens the experience of reading your resume.
Employment history with no dates: As a recruiter, when I see a resume of a prospective candidate with no dates accompanying the employment history, my first inclination is to think that this candidate must have something to hide. Why else would these dates be left off of a resume? Are there big gaps in employment? Is the candidate trying to hide the amount of experience they actually have? Has this candidate only had short-term employment? Inquiring minds are going to want to know! By leaving dates off of your resume, you are just creating more work for you, as well as the recruiter, because most recruiters will not only ask for these dates in an interview, but will also ask that you resubmit your resume with dates included. I have never, and will never, forward a resume to a hiring manager that is missing these important dates of employment!
Also, you should remember this important point: you need to show the employers what you can benefit them but not what you may benefit from them. The perfect resume must focus on the strength in necessary experience and skills that the employer may require from you. You will score more point with your knowledge about the employers and understanding of what they expect from you. 3. Different: Make your resume and resume differ from those of other candidates. As such, you should never start your resume with such general salutations as ”dear sir,” or ”dear sirs,” . Normally, when a company posts publicly a recruitment ad, it will surely address the name, address and contact number so as the resumes may be sent to correct address. Don’t miss these important details and don’t forget to start your resume professionally with clear address of the company and even, the name of the responsible person. The employer will understand that you have researched carefully about them and correct your resume before sending to them, and, you have gained a good score then!
Everyone Needs a ”Resume Coach”. Can you imagine any competition, serious endeavor, an Olympic athlete or top performer in any field where a coach, consultant or mentor is not employed to achieve excellent results? That is why sports coaches, fitness coaches, executive coaches, sales coaches, life coaches and experts are sought. They provide the strategy, tactics and best practices to quickly and easily achieve results. Yet on many career blogs you will see that, usually to save a few dollars, people often insist on doing their own resumes and their own interview prep without using any type of career coaching. While this do-it-yourself approach may result in finding jobs, in today’s competitive world it usually means a longer job search or a suboptimal result. The questions to ask in a buyers’ market are: ”How can I get a competitive edge?” and ”How do I win this resume game?”
