First Page Content – First page content of a resume will vary depending on the experience of the candidate and the role in question. The first rule of first page content is to ensure that you capture any critical information that might get you hired. There is no benefit in burying important information in the latter part of a resume, as it may never be looked at. While adhering to this rule is simple enough for a one page resume, it requires more thought for highly experienced and senior roles. With years or even decades of experience behind a candidate, serious thought needs to be given to information included versus excluded. Some things to consider with first page content include. Contact Details – Name and contact details should be easily identifiable at the top of the each page. Contact information should include at minimum, address, email and phone details. Job Title – Include current role or job title at the top of a resume, below Contact Details. It will add value to an application, particularly if applying for a similar or related role, indicating the applicant already has practical experience.
DON’T. Misrepresent the Truth – Lying on your resume is never a good idea. You don’t want to start a professional relationship based on the misrepresentation of facts. Just as you would hope the employer is not lying to you about the job requirements, salary, etc, they expect you are not lying to them about your background and/or skill sets. It’s the decent and respectable way to conduct yourself and there is no room for dishonesty in the workplace because, sooner or later, these things always have a tendency to come to the surface. Remember: The truth shall set you free! Use Slang or Jargon – You need to be as professional as possible in the context of your resume if you expect to be taken seriously as a professional. For this reason, you should avoid using familiar lingo, slang, or jargon in your resume. The exception to this rule is when using very industry-specific terminology to describe your particular skills. This can actually help to lend you credit as a knowledgeable individual and an expert in your field, but your such terms wisely and tactfully. Include a Picture – Unless you’re a model or in a professional dependent on physical attributes, I always advise against putting your picture on your resume. In my experience, it can do more harm than good. So keep the formatting of the resume simple and let the hiring manager use their imagination until they call you in for an interview. Plus, your looks should have nothing to do with your professionalism or the credentials qualifying you for the position. In the business world (even legally), your appearance should have no value as a selling point for you as a competent job candidate.
4. Writing Experience Section: Write your most recent experiences first followed by your next most recent experiences. This order is called reverse chronological order. Avoid writing short and irrelevant experiences. Only list less relevant experiences if it is the case of filling employment gap. Make it well formatted and easily readable. List your each experience in numbered or bulleted format. Writing Education Section: 5. Writing Education Section: You must write your most relevant academic achievements in education section. You may also list the honors and awards you earned. If you done any professional, career oriented course/s you should also list them in Education and Training section.
It is a powerful resume that tells Stephen’s story quite well. But we didn’t get to this resume quickly or easily. There were bumps and bruises, starts and stops, and detours along the way. I’ll also tell you a bit of my story, as I am a resume writer who learned and grew from the experience of working with Stephen. I’ll tell this story in the form of issues, describing each issue encountered and the ways that the issues were resolved. Issue #1-Personalization. Managers want to hire people, not marketing brochures. Your resume should give them a good sense of who are and how you might fit into their team. It’s a recipe for disaster when your resume tells one story and your interview tells another. You do a disservice to yourself when you let others describe you without comment or intervention. You know yourself better than anyone else, so it’s your decision how you are portrayed in your resume. The first sentence in Stephen’s summary of qualifications statement answers one of my common questions when gathering information for a resume: ”What is it that makes you most proud?” Stephen loves to stretch software functionality almost to its breaking point-it’s a game to see who will win. Even though he’s proficient with numerous BI and data warehousing tools, Excel remains his favorite. It was during our discussions about Excel that I captured this sentence: ”Innovative technology professional who takes pride in building complex solutions with basic technology, getting the most from a company’s technology investment.”
1. What is A Resume? resume is a presentation of your qualifications for employer. It lets your employer know what type of job you are seeking and highlights your education, experience, skills and other relevant information. A resume (or CV – Curriculum Vitae) only may be the tips to potential employer for determination whether or not you will be interviewed. 2. Does a resume always need to be only one page? esume (CV) length should not exceed 2 sides of A4. How much of those two sides you fill depends on how much you have done. 3. Should the education section always be near the top? f you have recently completed formal education your academic achievements will form a major part of your qualifications, and it is recommended to place these near the top of your resume. 4. Is an objective always necessary? No, it is not crucial. But however an employer will be impressed if you have a focused idea of where you want your career to be heading.
Next step, create a bulleted list of accomplishments in each position using the C-A-R method. For each bullet, follow the C-A-R formula: indicate a Challenge you faced, followed by the Action you took, and identify the Results of those actions. You must ensure that the achievements you include are relevant and significant so that a reviewer won’t read it and say ”who cares.” This is so important. Those who write resumes for a living are very skilled at wording these achievements to sound very impressive and make them relevant. For example:
