Include Irrelevant Info (AKA ”Fluff”) – If it’s not important, don’t add it to your resume. If you were a cook 10 years ago but now you’re looking for a job in retail management, don’t clutter up your resume with irrelevancy. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager and ask yourself what they would see as important. How does your background correspond with their needs as an employer? Anything else is fluff. Don’t add your hobbies to your resume. Don’t add your references (if they want them, they’ll ask at the appropriate time). And don’t include your high school education either. Finally, don’t be redundant and repeat yourself throughout the context of your resume. It’s OK to reinforce themes, but don’t push it. If your title has been Branch Manager at each of your past three companies, find a way to differentiate each of these positions and highlight your most notable accomplishments. Don’t just copy and paste the line ”Managed a team of branch employees” three times. That will get you nowhere.
* Red Flag Number 1: Resumes written in third person. Resumes should never be written in third person. Use first person and choose the present or past tense to showcase the most important and relevant information to your employment goals. In the example below, you will see that a resume written in third-person does not have the dynamic impact of a resume written in first-person: Jane Doe is an excellent event manager and never went over budget. The resume statement above does not use action verbs and is not a strong statement of Jane’s abilities. We know this resume is written about Jane because her name is at the top of the document, so there is no reason to keep stating Jane’s name – we need to use that space to sell her abilities to the prospective employer!
Employment history with no dates: As a recruiter, when I see a resume of a prospective candidate with no dates accompanying the employment history, my first inclination is to think that this candidate must have something to hide. Why else would these dates be left off of a resume? Are there big gaps in employment? Is the candidate trying to hide the amount of experience they actually have? Has this candidate only had short-term employment? Inquiring minds are going to want to know! By leaving dates off of your resume, you are just creating more work for you, as well as the recruiter, because most recruiters will not only ask for these dates in an interview, but will also ask that you resubmit your resume with dates included. I have never, and will never, forward a resume to a hiring manager that is missing these important dates of employment!

On the other hand, it’s not uncommon to believe that the highest priced service is the best; after all, they must be good in order to command thousand dollar fees, right? Wrong. While the price of the resume and limitations of your budget are important considerations, you don’t always get what you pay for. Even the ”cheapest” services may end up costing you more in the long run when you realize you’ve just thrown away money to someone who used the same Word template you could have utilized on your own without including important information. The higher-priced services may conversely, lead you to believe that you absolutely NEED a $1000 resume and frequently land their clients based on a strong sales pitch for the resume and additional services, not on their writing talent. Price should equal value, i.e., the ultimate return on your investment. If you are quoted a reasonable fee (somewhere well in-between the $99.00 guys and the $1,000+ heavy hitters), you have a good chance of paying for a well-crafted document that can easily generate more interviews, boost your confidence and frequently position you as a candidate worthy of a position that commands a higher salary.
The above mentioned points are basics for any resume. These should never be overlooked or else a ’professional looking resume’ will be a myth. After this, comes resume writing. The style of the resume depends completely upon the candidate’s information to be included in it. A fresher and a candidate with work experience will definitely have different styles of resumes. There are basically three styles of resumes. Chronological Resume: This is a resume, which lists all the qualification and professional details in a chronological order. It is more like a list of all that one has done and achieved in life. This style of resume has very less scope for the reader to interpret and understand the applicant, because it is merely a list of information. Functional Resume: This kind of resume gives the applicant a chance to be descriptive, and speak about his/her qualifications, achievements, experience, etc. The drawback of this style is that it becomes too descriptive, and might make your resume look like a thesis.
