7. Write About Your Results, Not Responsibilities. Don’t let your resume make the mistake of focusing on your previous jobs’ responsibilities. Your resume should focus on the computer programming work that you did and what you achieved. As a hint, avoid using the word responsibility or responsibilities on your resume so you don’t fall into this trap. In writing about each of your previous jobs, discuss your results. Tell about what results were realized because of the work you performed. Be quantitative. Reviewers love to see numbers and results. Tell about how many desktops or users you supported, recount how many databases you administered, show a percentage of application or network uptime you maintained, provide a percent reduction of security incidents you achieved, etc. Get the idea? This is where you impress your reviewer. One of the current trends in job candidate evaluation is behavioral with the idea being that your past performance is the best indicator of your future performance. So, toot your horn a little and make your accomplishments known. Quantifying your experience is usually the most difficult part of preparing a resume for any person. So take some time, think it through, and detail the results you achieved in each of your positions relevant to the one for which you are applying.

If you don’t have certifications, why not begin training for the one most applicable to you? These can ease a career transition proving your knowledge in new areas where you may not have as much work experience. There are many great online or in-person training programs to prepare you for the certification exams. 5. Show any Training and Education. List any degrees you hold since most employers want to see these. If you have work towards a degree, but are still pursuing or have never finished but you may someday, list it as in progress. You also want to provide a short listing of relevant technology training courses you have taken. Many candidates forget to list these items out. They can help further demonstrate your expertise and exposure to different technologies, especially for a less experienced candidate. I suggest putting Training last on your resume, just below Education. As an added bonus, listing these technology skill trainings helps add more key words to your resume and improve your results on resume screenings.

Include Irrelevant Info (AKA ”Fluff”) – If it’s not important, don’t add it to your resume. If you were a cook 10 years ago but now you’re looking for a job in retail management, don’t clutter up your resume with irrelevancy. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager and ask yourself what they would see as important. How does your background correspond with their needs as an employer? Anything else is fluff. Don’t add your hobbies to your resume. Don’t add your references (if they want them, they’ll ask at the appropriate time). And don’t include your high school education either. Finally, don’t be redundant and repeat yourself throughout the context of your resume. It’s OK to reinforce themes, but don’t push it. If your title has been Branch Manager at each of your past three companies, find a way to differentiate each of these positions and highlight your most notable accomplishments. Don’t just copy and paste the line ”Managed a team of branch employees” three times. That will get you nowhere.

Personalized Service & Relationships- Probably the most important aspect to factor in along with the above is your comfort level with your writer that is developed either through phone consults or email correspondence. You need to feel confident, not pressured. You need to be sure that your writer is going to work with you no matter what and that the writer will be open to suggestions. Yes, they are the expert, but it’s also your resume. If someone dictates what you need without considering your concerns, you will never feel comfortable using your resume. You need to make sure that they are approachable and reachable. You need to make sure that you gain a sense of personalized attention, not just empty promises. Even if a writer is busy (and most good services are busy for a reason), you should have a feeling of assurance that your needs will be just as important as other clients. Conclusion – Ask questions and trust your gut…you know the type of people with which you like to interact, so if you feel uneasy about getting the attention you need, you probably won’t. While following these recommendations cannot always guarantee a successful partnership, they can certainly help you narrow down your selection and relieve your mind of a wasted investment. In the end, it will most likely be the combination of expertise, pricing, service level and personalization that will cement your choice and you’ll ultimately be grateful that you took the time to do your homework.

Potential employers can decide if they are interested in you after reading your resume. They can see what you look like during the interview. RESUME STYLES There are several styles of resumes along with numerous variations. Your experience and the kind of job you are applying for will help to determine the style of resume you use. The two basic styles are: Chronological Resumes and Functional Skills Resumes. Some of the variations include the main themes of business, academic, general, student, standard, professional, or engineering. A Chronological Resume lists work experience in reverse chronological order (the most recent experience first). It includes some descriptive text about each position, usually described in about one paragraph. This type of resume offers several advantages: it is widely accepted, they are easy to read, and they show a clear pattern of your development. The disadvantages include: it does not highlight your major accomplishment(s), nor do they effectively show your other skills. Functional Skills Resumes highlight your skills and accomplishments rather than providing a chronological record of your job history. Your accomplishments and skills are listed at the beginning. Your job history is listed at the end of the resume. This type of resume allows you to call attention to your achievements. The major disadvantage is that employers may find it difficult to follow your work experience. Many people discover that a combination of these two kinds of resumes is the best way to go. You may want to try several different types of combinations before settling upon a final design.

7. Keep it Relevant. In second grade, I played the role of a singing tree in my school play. As important an event as that was to me in my life, it is completely irrelevant to our discussion here about resume writing tips. You should follow the same advice on your resume. If it is not relevant or you can’t reword it so that it is relevant to the job or employer, leave it off. Focus your resume on the items that qualify you for the position you are seeking. In other words, get rid of the fluff. For example, I once received a resume from a programmer, however the only thing I remember from it was that they attended clown college and competed in national juggling competitions. Yes, that was interesting, but it completely trumped their qualifications for the programming position which I don’t even remember. Basically, limit items on your resume to those relevant to the position for which you are applying. Do not include irrelevant items to that position on the resume. If you haven’t figured this out yet, this means you will have multiple, fine-tuned versions of your resume for each type of position for which you apply.

First Page Content – First page content of a resume will vary depending on the experience of the candidate and the role in question. The first rule of first page content is to ensure that you capture any critical information that might get you hired. There is no benefit in burying important information in the latter part of a resume, as it may never be looked at. While adhering to this rule is simple enough for a one page resume, it requires more thought for highly experienced and senior roles. With years or even decades of experience behind a candidate, serious thought needs to be given to information included versus excluded. Some things to consider with first page content include. Contact Details – Name and contact details should be easily identifiable at the top of the each page. Contact information should include at minimum, address, email and phone details. Job Title – Include current role or job title at the top of a resume, below Contact Details. It will add value to an application, particularly if applying for a similar or related role, indicating the applicant already has practical experience.

How you position and organize technologies on your resume depends on how you view yourself. For those who feel tightly coupled with technology, placing it on the first page makes sense. In Stephen’s case, he is not so much interested in specific technologies as in pushing the limits of what the technology can do. He wants to see tangible results. We organized his technologies into five categories and placed them near the end of the resume. We focused the first page on the results instead of technology. Issue #3-Projects. Determining which projects to include and how to describe Stephen’s roles in each of them was particularly challenging. He has worked on many projects over a span of eight years, so discussion alone was not enough to decide which projects to feature. I asked Stephen to create a list that included every project he had worked on, no matter how small. From that list we selected projects based on how well they matched Stephen’s interests and skills – how well the demonstrated ”the whole person.” Then we organized them into seven categories.

Writing a Resume can be a labour of love, but all too often in today’s uncertain economic climate that love can go unrequited when it comes to job applications. If I had a dollar for each time a client said they had not received a response to a job application, I would be considerably wealthier. Like a first date, it is critical to make a first good impression when it comes to writing a resume. Employers and recruiters tend to work on a strict ’love (or at least attraction!) at first site’ policy, and if your resume is not up to scratch, you can expect immediate rejection. Writing a good resume is a challenge. In a few short pages the author is required to distil a lifetime of work experience, achievements and aspirations, whilst at the same time convincing a third-party of their value as a potential employee. It is not unusual for applicants to spend a considerable amount of time drafting and redrafting their resume. And given the potential benefit a good resume can deliver – namely obtaining that desired job – the effort agonising over the right words, phrases and content is time well spent.

Writers should be certified. Certification is one way of assuring oneself about the writer’s experience and the quality of the work. Examine samples. When selecting, applicants should not hesitate to ask for samples of resumes previously written by the writer. If the resume samples are not impressive and look a repetition instead of being customized, applicants should reconsider and try other options. Communicate with the writer. This is important. If applicants are able to have a direct dialogue with the writers they will be able to asses how much the writer understands his job. A good writer will be able to discuss in depth the applicant’s career goals, education, work experience and history etc. before beginning the process of writing the resume.
