22. Why are the Employers Using Scannable Resumes? Scannable resumes have advantages for employers: Employers can simply search through their database and identify names with the specific experience, skills, and qualifications. Human Resource departments can be much smaller because this technology speeds up the entire hiring process. 23. What is an Online Resume? An online resume is a plain text document (*.txt) which can be cut-and-pasted into online forms. It can be used by resume builder because ASCII files are recognized by PC’s, Macintoshes, UNIX Workstations, and mainframe terminals. 24. Why do I need an Online Resume? You can build a resume in online version and to send it to companies who are soliciting resumes via e-mail. Frequently the companies who are calling for resumes want them in the form of a plain text document sent in the body of an e-mail message – NOT PDF, NOT MS WORD. 25. Can’t I just send my resume as an email attachment? Sending any attachments through email can be tricky, and the last thing you want to do is make a potential employer work to read your resume. There are many types of computer systems, increasing the risk that the program that you create your resume in will not be compatible to the computer of the receiver, making it impossible for them to open up the attachment. The online resume solves that problem as you import it directly into the text body of the email message. Its simple, plain text look is easy for employers to read through email.

Potential employers can decide if they are interested in you after reading your resume. They can see what you look like during the interview. RESUME STYLES There are several styles of resumes along with numerous variations. Your experience and the kind of job you are applying for will help to determine the style of resume you use. The two basic styles are: Chronological Resumes and Functional Skills Resumes. Some of the variations include the main themes of business, academic, general, student, standard, professional, or engineering. A Chronological Resume lists work experience in reverse chronological order (the most recent experience first). It includes some descriptive text about each position, usually described in about one paragraph. This type of resume offers several advantages: it is widely accepted, they are easy to read, and they show a clear pattern of your development. The disadvantages include: it does not highlight your major accomplishment(s), nor do they effectively show your other skills. Functional Skills Resumes highlight your skills and accomplishments rather than providing a chronological record of your job history. Your accomplishments and skills are listed at the beginning. Your job history is listed at the end of the resume. This type of resume allows you to call attention to your achievements. The major disadvantage is that employers may find it difficult to follow your work experience. Many people discover that a combination of these two kinds of resumes is the best way to go. You may want to try several different types of combinations before settling upon a final design.

Resume and resume are one way to show off your personality and make the best explanation to the employers’ question why they are impressed at you but not at other candidates. It is a powerful resume that tells Stephen’s story quite well. But we didn’t get to this resume quickly or easily. There were bumps and bruises, starts and stops, and detours along the way. I’ll also tell you a bit of my story, as I am a resume writer who learned and grew from the experience of working with Stephen. I’ll tell this story in the form of issues, describing each issue encountered and the ways that the issues were resolved. Issue #1-Personalization. Managers want to hire people, not marketing brochures. Your resume should give them a good sense of who are and how you might fit into their team. It’s a recipe for disaster when your resume tells one story and your interview tells another. You do a disservice to yourself when you let others describe you without comment or intervention. You know yourself better than anyone else, so it’s your decision how you are portrayed in your resume. The first sentence in Stephen’s summary of qualifications statement answers one of my common questions when gathering information for a resume: ”What is it that makes you most proud?” Stephen loves to stretch software functionality almost to its breaking point-it’s a game to see who will win. Even though he’s proficient with numerous BI and data warehousing tools, Excel remains his favorite. It was during our discussions about Excel that I captured this sentence: ”Innovative technology professional who takes pride in building complex solutions with basic technology, getting the most from a company’s technology investment.”

Poorly formatted resumes: Every now and then while working in my position as a Corporate Recruiter, I receive resumes the old-fashion way, through the U.S. Postal Service, or as most people call it these days, snail mail. Although this is not my preferred method to receive resumes, I don’t typically hold it against a candidate; unless of course the resume is so badly formatted that it is unreadable. Or, even worse, the resume is hand-written! Not too long ago, I received a handwritten resume for a management position. There is no way that I would ever forward a resume of this nature to a hiring manager. No matter how a resume is submitted, it should be professionally formatted, edited for misspelled words and grammatical errors, and definitely should be typed! Beware! The most misspelled word on resumes (and my biggest pet peeve) is manager; if the word is spelled as manger, spell check does not catch the error!

Certifications- There are a number of different writing, training and coaching certifications available from which to pursue and from a variety of professional organizations that focus on writing or coaching practices. This does not mean that certification guarantees a quality product, nor does it mean that whoever certified the individual is the best judge of writing/coaching, particularly when the judging is based on a number of subjective opinions as to what a ”good” coach or writer really should do. However, many of the professionals I know who are in the business of certifying individuals are frequently right on the money. Though certifications are certainly helpful in your decision making process, you cannot automatically discount a service that does not boast any. Most certifications require payment in order to take a test or complete a course and there are many qualified, talented professionals who do not feel the need for investing money just to prove what they already know – that they’re skilled in what they do and have proven their mettle over the years, gaining more knowledge and hands-on experience than any certification could demonstrate. You may prefer to work with an experienced writer rather than someone who just recently obtained his or her certification, yet has little experience their belt or find someone who has both. Conclusion – While certification is helpful and shows a commitment to one’s craft, there are plenty of other good writers who are producing astounding work without the formality. Again, samples and other credentials (below) speak volumes.

2. Close your word processing program and re-open the ASCII file. You will not be able to see your changes until you have done this. Note that it has been stripped of virtually all original formatting. 3. Go through your new ASCII document line-by-line. Align all text flush to the left-hand margin. 4. Remove all ”centering,” ”right hand margin,” and ”justification” alignments. 5. Although you should no longer see them, if visible, remove all graphics, artwork, and special character formatting. 6. Remove all tab characters. 7. Remove all columns. 8. Replace bullets with a simple ASCII asterisk (*). 9. Carefully check the spelling and the accuracy of your data. 10. If you wish, use ASCII characters to enhance the appearance of your resume. Asterisks, plus signs, or other keyboard characters can be used to create visual lines that separate sections of your resume and make it easier to read. The above steps convert your resume to ASCII without line breaks. When pasted into a web-based form or email message, your resume will automatically wrap to the size of the window.
