A good writer will converse with the client and obtain information out of the applicant which he would otherwise have not produced. Time to write. A good writer will take about two weeks to complete a resume. This however, will vary according to the writer and the types of resumes written. Selection of a good resume writer is not easy. But the resume is what makes the difference between being accepted and rejected. Therefore, applicants will be greatly benefited by finding a good writer to write their resumes regardless of whether it is a sales resume or an executive resume. An effective resume doesn’t just get you a job. It gets you the perfect job.

Negativity toward previous employers: Honestly, I never thought I would be adding this deadly sin to the list, as I have, in all my years of experience as a recruiter, never witnessed this until just recently. However, I was so shocked when I received a resume where a prospective candidate showed their previous employer in a negative light, that I knew that I never wanted to see this again! This candidate chose to list their reasons for leaving each of their previous positions. This is not a problem, and, in fact, can be quite helpful and save some time during the interview process (as recruiters are going to ask those questions anyway). It was the candidate’s reason for leaving his last job that floored me! He stated that the reason that he left his last job was because his previous employer was unethical, made bad decisions, and treated their employees horribly. Talk about bad press for that company! There is no way a recruiter would take the time to interview a candidate who has the potential of ruining a company’s reputation. After all, if he spoke so poorly about his previous company, what is he going to say about his next company?

K.I.S.S. – A wiser man than me once made this bold statement and it’s extremely applicable when writing your resume: Keep It Simple, Stupid! Too many people make too much of an effort to ”stand out from the pack” and in doing so they may unwittingly be hurting themselves. In some professions, such as the creative design field, it may be advantageous to show your originality and imagination, but in other business fields this kind of flamboyancy in a resume is unnecessary and can actually be injurious to your cause. In terms of formatting, the same holds true. I have found that people tend to have much more success when they opt for an uncomplicated formatting style. Some people still want to get all jazzed up with pictures and text boxes and funky font, but that’s just fluff. It’s noise. It is irrelevant to the purpose of your resume, which is to sell yourself through highlighting your skills and accomplishments. And hiring managers see right through that!

Work Experience – Work history will typically begin on the first page of a resume and for most people will make up the bulk of resume content. Work experience needs to list most recent roles first, and include organisation, position and dates employed. Also included should be responsibilities and achievements. This should not be an exhaustive list, but should include those of greatest importance and those aligned to the position description. Be sure to include achievement outcomes and metrics if possible, as they will lend weight to your assertions. More emphasis should be placed on recent roles, or previous roles that are aligned with the position being applied for. Older and less relevant roles simply need organisation, position and dates employed.

Rarely will you get a second chance from an in-person reviewer. So keep your resume format simple to avoid having any issues with software tools used by potential employers. Tip 4. Present Your Work Experience in a CAR. Not a literal car, but an acronym CAR to help guide your resume writing. First, for each position listed on your resume, provide a short paragraph that describes your roles and responsibilities. This tip is designed to make sure you use keywords related to the position that the software may be searching for in your resume. If done correctly, it should allow your resume to earn a higher ranking in the system.

Your best chance is to go with an agency that specializes in your field. Beware of agencies that continually run the same ad because, often, they are just trying to build a list of candidates. I recommend that you only use agencies that don’t require you to pay a fee. TRADE JOURNALS AND PERIODICALS — Are often the best places to look. This is one of the primary means of job advertisement for some types of professions. Example: The magazine Environmental Science continually carries ads for environmental professionals. Other good places to look include: trade shows and professional conventions, personnel offices, college placement offices, friends you have who are in the same profession as you. Another method is to simply go through the yellow pages and look for companies which may need a person with your skills. Then contact these companies by phone and follow-up by sending in your resume. Job seeking is a skill that requires persistence. You must not become discouraged. Keep making plenty of contacts. Sooner or later, you’ll find the job that’s right for you. THE JOB INTERVIEW Most people are nervous when they go to a job interview. However, by preparing beforehand you won’t have anything to worry about. Believe it or not, occasionally the person conducting the interview is nervous, too! Most interviewers will make a decision within the first 5 to 10 minutes of the interview. There are a number of steps that you can take that will greatly improve your chances of getting the job. The first (and perhaps the most obvious) thing to consider is your appearance. No matter what type of job you apply for, you should dress appropriately.

A video resume is a short video created by job applicants to highlight their skills and experience. 2. This Resume format tests the Creative & Communicative side of the candidate. 3. Some video resumes include animated infographics and music as well. Because a video resume is usually quite brief (between one and five minutes), it is almost always supplemented by a traditional resume. Online Resume. 1. This is my favorite format. 2. An online portfolio is a great option for showcasing your talent & uniqueness. 3. You can go wild and free with your creativity, format and presentation. The combinations are endless. 4. You can link everything together (social media channels) and give multiple options (Mini, Chronological, Detailed etc print out options) 5. You have a customized URL with your name. 6. You have a customized email with your name and domain. 7. Highly recommended if you are serious about your brand.
