If you have ever been on a fishing expedition, you know the most successful fishermen use the best, most appropriate bait available. They also have the most lines (and hooks) in the water. A job search is much like a fishing expedition. Your resume represents the bait, and each company that you send your resume to represents a line with a hook that allows you to snag a job. Think of your ideal job as that big fish, the one you can’t wait to brag about to your friends, the one that didn’t get away, and your claim to fame! Just as it is important for a fisherman to use the right bait to attract that big fish, it is imperative that job seekers use the right resume to attract that big job opportunity. During my career as a Corporate Recruiter, I have had the opportunity to review thousands of resumes. Some of those resumes have been stellar; the resume is formatted professionally, well written, and portrays the candidates in their best light. On the other hand, I have also had the unfortunate opportunity to review some of the worst resumes ever written! In fact, some of those resumes were so bad that they have received honorary status on my list of the seven worst things I have ever seen on a resume. LinkedIn Resume. 1. Using your LinkedIn profile as a resume is quick and easy, because LinkedIn does all the work for you. 2. Fill in your LinkedIn profile as completely as possible and you’ll have an online resume that you can download as a PDF, print and share via email. 3. One of the biggest benefits of using LinkedIn is that the visibility is primarily targeted to the Business / Corporate Community. Social Resume. 1. Social resumes includes links to one’s social media pages. 2. Social resumes provide a more complex view of an applicant, and demonstrate the applicant’s fluency with social media. 3. You can link to your website from your Google+, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter pages and your other social media accounts, so you’re sure that prospective employers can view it. 4. You can also list the URL on your paper resume. 5. Recommended to send this Resume Digitally. Video Resume. 1. A video resume is a short video created by job applicants to highlight their skills and experience. 2. This Resume format tests the Creative & Communicative side of the candidate. 3. Some video resumes include animated infographics and music as well. Because a video resume is usually quite brief (between one and five minutes), it is almost always supplemented by a traditional resume. Online Resume. 1. This is my favorite format. 2. An online portfolio is a great option for showcasing your talent & uniqueness. 3. You can go wild and free with your creativity, format and presentation. The combinations are endless. 4. You can link everything together (social media channels) and give multiple options (Mini, Chronological, Detailed etc print out options) 5. You have a customized URL with your name. 6. You have a customized email with your name and domain. 7. Highly recommended if you are serious about your brand.

Given the amount of time and effort the author can spend writing a resume, many job applicants still entertain the notion that employers or recruiters will reciprocate, by spending a fair amount of time pouring over the details of their resume. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth, especially when it comes to the first screening. With hundreds and potentially thousands of resume’s to review, recruiters will typically give a resume short shrift on the first pass, as they attempt to cull the numbers to a manageable level. It would seem that when it comes to early resume screening, it is rather a case of ’wham bam’ than a considered ’get to know you’. In all probability, a recruiter will look at a resume and decide within the first minute, often within thirty seconds, whether to accept or reject a resume. Due to the sheer volume of applications, employers and recruiters simply don’t have time to carefully review all resume’s first time around. They are actively looking to cull back the list of potential candidates, and will ruthlessly weed out those resume’s that fall short of their expectations.

An application for a job is accompanied with a resume. This is a document that presents all the information about your qualifications, abilities, skills and personal traits in a proper format, such that the reader gets all the required information about you. The main purpose of your curriculum vitae (CV) is to answer the employer’s queries related to the vacant job position. It is thus used for a formal and professional communication. This makes it very important that you have a professional resume. Your CV or resume is your first impression on the prospective employer. Prospective employers may spend as little as six seconds looking at your resume to make an assessment of your abilities and to match those abilities to their job opening. In those six seconds they do not read every word on the resume! Instead, employers look at the overall format – is it easy to read? Does this resume contain the relevant information to their particular field? Do the first bullets at the top of the resume match their job description? If any of these things do not meet their criteria, they move your resume into the ”bad pile.” Resumes in the bad pile are those resumes that will never be read completely and probably will not be looked at again. Avoid these five resume red flags to make sure you stay out of the bad pile!

My advice is simply to check and double-check your work. Better yet, also get a third-party to proofread your resume. You would be surprised how often someone else picks up an issue in your resume that you have missed. For many individuals I would suggest getting some form of help with your resume evaluation. This can be as simple as getting someone you know and trust to review your document, or perhaps enlisting the services of a professional resume writer. A resume writer can add significant value for many reasons, including poor grasp of language, intermittent work history, returning to the workforce after a long break or simply looking for an edge over the competition. In my experience, an independent or experienced eye cast over a resume will often identify errors, irrelevance or poor communication that the author can miss. Individuals often get ’too close’ to their resume to fully appreciate all the nuances of the document, and as a result they are not able to ’see the forest for the trees’. Like a first date gone horribly wrong, if a resume is not right the first time, don’t expect to be called back for a second chance. As outlined above, there is little sentimentality when it comes to harsh realities of resume screening. However, by following these helpful hints or getting some help from an independent third-party, you will greatly improve the chances of your resume surviving first round screening. And by avoiding the early reject pile the opportunity to further any potential relationship with a prospective employer won’t be over before it even begins.

Eliminating the compatibility problems associated with word-processed resumes sent as e-mail attachments, web resumes offer the advantage of maintaining layout and design on the systems of anyone with a web browser. Available for viewing around the clock, conveying a technology-savvy image, and allowing the ability to add supporting content to your resume (effectively creating an online portfolio promoting your qualifications), web resumes are becoming a progressively important tool in the job search. The creation of a web resume or resume portfolio is far beyond the scope of this article, but if web resumes are an electronic format that interest you, be aware that many service providers have begun offering web resume design and hosting at affordable prices.

I thought this was a powerful statement that couldn’t be a more perfect fit, so I submitted it as part of my resume certification program. The rewrite I received back was a bit of a surprise. The ”resume expert” restated the sentence as ”Innovative technology professional, expert in building complex solutions and extracting optimum results from a company’s technology investment.” In trying to improve what I had written, the reviewer changed the meaning and reduced the value of the statement. The more general statement sounds good, but it loses the concept of making much from basic technology. More importantly, it is a less clear statement that takes a more careful read to find the meaning. Most important of all – it loses the sense of Stephen as a person who takes pride in his technical abilities. Stephen also has a love of learning and finds it rewarding to help others learn. He is naturally patient, and is clear and descriptive in his explanations. This important aspect of Stephen closes his summary of qualifications with the statement” ”Applies natural talent to translate a love of learning into a love of teaching, and helping others to learn.” To reinforce this message we interwove elements of teaching into his resume with a section titled Business Intelligence (BI) Technical Training and Learning Laboratory Management
