These agencies vary in the way they work. Some can be very helpful. Others are somewhat unscrupulous.

Employment history with no dates: As a recruiter, when I see a resume of a prospective candidate with no dates accompanying the employment history, my first inclination is to think that this candidate must have something to hide. Why else would these dates be left off of a resume? Are there big gaps in employment? Is the candidate trying to hide the amount of experience they actually have? Has this candidate only had short-term employment? Inquiring minds are going to want to know! By leaving dates off of your resume, you are just creating more work for you, as well as the recruiter, because most recruiters will not only ask for these dates in an interview, but will also ask that you resubmit your resume with dates included. I have never, and will never, forward a resume to a hiring manager that is missing these important dates of employment!

It is a powerful resume that tells Stephen’s story quite well. But we didn’t get to this resume quickly or easily. There were bumps and bruises, starts and stops, and detours along the way. I’ll also tell you a bit of my story, as I am a resume writer who learned and grew from the experience of working with Stephen. I’ll tell this story in the form of issues, describing each issue encountered and the ways that the issues were resolved. Issue #1-Personalization. Managers want to hire people, not marketing brochures. Your resume should give them a good sense of who are and how you might fit into their team. It’s a recipe for disaster when your resume tells one story and your interview tells another. You do a disservice to yourself when you let others describe you without comment or intervention. You know yourself better than anyone else, so it’s your decision how you are portrayed in your resume. The first sentence in Stephen’s summary of qualifications statement answers one of my common questions when gathering information for a resume: ”What is it that makes you most proud?” Stephen loves to stretch software functionality almost to its breaking point-it’s a game to see who will win. Even though he’s proficient with numerous BI and data warehousing tools, Excel remains his favorite. It was during our discussions about Excel that I captured this sentence: ”Innovative technology professional who takes pride in building complex solutions with basic technology, getting the most from a company’s technology investment.”

So if you are capable of producing a top notch job resume, you definitely increase your chances of getting a better job. Virtually every potential employer will want to see a resume from you. The resume will determine who gets a job interview. Your resume is a mini-statement about yourself. After reading your resume the employer should have a better ”feel” for you as a person and as a potential employer. It serves to get acquainted with the employer so that they can decide if they want to know more about you. The resume is the first step, your introduction to an employer. First impressions really do count. If you make a poor first impression, you’ll never get to step two — the job interview. To the purpose of your resume is to make a good first impression. And it could very well help you to get the better job you’re looking for. RESUME BASICS All good resumes follow the same general basic guidelines. While there is some flexibility in these guidelines, you don’t want to stray too far from them. You want a resume that is bold, exciting, and enticing. But not too much so. You also want a resume that is somewhat conservative. In other words, it must be bold. Not flashy. You must show that you have confidence in your abilities, but not sound like a braggart. You must sound eager to do the job, but not desperate. So there is a fine line that you must walk in order to produce the best possible resume. You want to use intelligent language. Stephen’s resume tells a story. It works as a well placed introduction that describes him in his entirety – his character, interests, and skills. What story does your resume convey? What does it say about your past, present, and future? A good resume does not come easily. It must be crafted over time and from all of the right perspectives. Put together all of the right pieces, including a pinch of this and a dash of that, to show the individual and make the resume interesting to read. Consider who you really are and how best to personalize your resume and properly position technology, projects, and value. Capture the sense of yourself that conjures up an image of you as a whole person.

Negativity toward previous employers: Honestly, I never thought I would be adding this deadly sin to the list, as I have, in all my years of experience as a recruiter, never witnessed this until just recently. However, I was so shocked when I received a resume where a prospective candidate showed their previous employer in a negative light, that I knew that I never wanted to see this again! This candidate chose to list their reasons for leaving each of their previous positions. This is not a problem, and, in fact, can be quite helpful and save some time during the interview process (as recruiters are going to ask those questions anyway). It was the candidate’s reason for leaving his last job that floored me! He stated that the reason that he left his last job was because his previous employer was unethical, made bad decisions, and treated their employees horribly. Talk about bad press for that company! There is no way a recruiter would take the time to interview a candidate who has the potential of ruining a company’s reputation. After all, if he spoke so poorly about his previous company, what is he going to say about his next company?

The Anatomy of a Resume with Impact. What gives a resume impact, with regards to standing out among other resumes submitted? It is a resume that can be easily read, displays skill sets that are immediately identifiable as being related to the advertised position, and highlights important accomplishments and achievements. A chronological resume emphasizes what a person is doing now; whereas, a skill set resume represents what a person can transfer from their entire career to this new role. A resume with impact also lists a professional summary at the beginning, in place of a career objective, and this provides career highlights that are relevant to any position. Finally, a highly effective resume will be well-written and formatted, with meticulous attention given to every minor detail. Why Invest in a Professional Writer? Most people are not fully equipped for the task of developing a resume that meets all of the criteria listed above and that is why a professional resume writer is needed. However, my experience has found that a professional writer is not contacted until an attempt has been made to wing it, so to speak, and the results sought have not been obtained. In other words, there have been few or no job calls received. There is a hesitation to pay for the cost of a resume writer, especially when a person is unemployed – and I certainly understand the financial limitations of that situation. What I have found is that anyone who needs a job also needs to make this investment as it is an investment in a career that can yield long term results.

Writers should be certified. Certification is one way of assuring oneself about the writer’s experience and the quality of the work. Examine samples. When selecting, applicants should not hesitate to ask for samples of resumes previously written by the writer. If the resume samples are not impressive and look a repetition instead of being customized, applicants should reconsider and try other options. Communicate with the writer. This is important. If applicants are able to have a direct dialogue with the writers they will be able to asses how much the writer understands his job. A good writer will be able to discuss in depth the applicant’s career goals, education, work experience and history etc. before beginning the process of writing the resume.
