* Red Flag Number 1: Resumes written in third person. Resumes should never be written in third person. Use first person and choose the present or past tense to showcase the most important and relevant information to your employment goals. In the example below, you will see that a resume written in third-person does not have the dynamic impact of a resume written in first-person: Jane Doe is an excellent event manager and never went over budget. The resume statement above does not use action verbs and is not a strong statement of Jane’s abilities. We know this resume is written about Jane because her name is at the top of the document, so there is no reason to keep stating Jane’s name – we need to use that space to sell her abilities to the prospective employer!
Writers should be certified. Certification is one way of assuring oneself about the writer’s experience and the quality of the work. Examine samples. When selecting, applicants should not hesitate to ask for samples of resumes previously written by the writer. If the resume samples are not impressive and look a repetition instead of being customized, applicants should reconsider and try other options. Communicate with the writer. This is important. If applicants are able to have a direct dialogue with the writers they will be able to asses how much the writer understands his job. A good writer will be able to discuss in depth the applicant’s career goals, education, work experience and history etc. before beginning the process of writing the resume.
Publications- Being published for recognized expertise is a genuine accomplishment for any writer and better yet, it’s easy to verify. A good writer will usually try to get their works published, either in some sort of resume or career book or on a respected website that displays career articles. A good writer is proud of their work and likes to see it in print. A good writer can back up claims of publications merely by sending you copies of articles or directing you to links where they are featured. Even if someone’s work is not featured in any public publication, either on the web or in a book/magazine, articles on their site will give you a good understanding of their writing style and knowledge of the industry (or lack thereof). Conclusion – If someone touts their publications, ask for proof or copies. Easy enough.
They are: Identification: Your name, address, and home and/or message phone number with area code, and e-mail address should be placed at the top of the resume. Objective: Describe your career or professional objective. Be specific and include what you want to do for the employer – not what you want the employer to do for you. Summary: Used by the candidate with experience; briefly state your achievements, the range of your experience and the environment(s) in which you have worked. Skills: Include into your resume (Curriculum Vitae, CV) foreign language fluency, knowledge of computers including specific hardware, software, operating systems and anything else that may be relevant. Community: Create a resume with information about any volunteer efforts, including name of organization, dates and a brief description of your activities and experiences. A final type of electronic resume is the web resume, also known as the online resume. Created using HTML, your web resume may be uploaded to space provided by a web-hosting provider. Eliminating the compatibility problems associated with word-processed resumes sent as e-mail attachments, web resumes offer the advantage of maintaining layout and design on the systems of anyone with a web browser. Available for viewing around the clock, conveying a technology-savvy image, and allowing the ability to add supporting content to your resume (effectively creating an online portfolio promoting your qualifications), web resumes are becoming a progressively important tool in the job search. The creation of a web resume or resume portfolio is far beyond the scope of this article, but if web resumes are an electronic format that interest you, be aware that many service providers have begun offering web resume design and hosting at affordable prices.
Avoid vanilla, blanket statements that cannot be backed up. To accomplish this, you should offer details rather than meaningless phrases like top performer, top achiever, employee of the month, etc. While I am sure these are great accomplishments, you must explain them and tell why and how these recognitions should matter to a new employer. Remember, the actual recognition is secondary to your achievements, a potential employer will care more about why you earned recognition. 6. Avoid Flowery Language That Diminishes Your Achievements – You could have a comedy show with some of the statements people make on their resumes. You don’t want your resume to stand out for the wrong reasons. Avoid creative writing. Avoid big words and uncommon vocabulary. Avoid over the top statements that make you sound like you saved the universe. They immediately call your credibility immediately into question. Resume writer Don Goodman shares one of his favorite claims as ”Rocketed performance to stellar heights.” Says Goodman, ”People don’t speak like that; I have never heard an executive tell the HR person that they needed someone who could rocket performance to stellar heights. Remember, people hire people they like, so don’t make your resume read like an amateur poet wrote it.”
